The name "Gattopardo" means Leopard and it is the emblem of the Sicilian village where Saverio and Antonio (your hosts) grew up. The Leopard comes from the novel of the same name by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.

The town and Palace of Donnafugata described in the novel are based on Saverio and Antonio’s hometown and Palazzo Filangeri-Cuto, a focal point of their village. The Leopard is considered one of the most important novels in Italian literature, relating the changes to Sicilian life and class structure during the revolution.
